The Author:
Previously Lloyd Morgan-Jackson and Myster Emmet have succeeded in rescuing Wendy Torrance from the Hedge Maze while witnessing the power of The Wendigo first hand. With them back inside the hotel seemingly safe, they start to get to the root of the mystery.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I open the door of the main entrance, looking inside carefully, to make sure there isn't anyone hostile waiting in the hallway.
Myster Emmet:
"Let's go inside...I'm sure Danny would be so glad to see you." I say to Wendy as I offer my arm out to her, to hold her up if she needs help walking.
Bartender Ghost:
The warmth of the hotel floods over you, surely a welcoming sensation given the raging storm. It is quiet, with no signs of danger. There is however a faint flickering of the lights. Mrs. Torrance is exhausted and leans against the wall for a moment while starting to get warm. "You two came out to help me... and you didn't seem fazed by that creature out there..." She trails off. "I think... I need to lay down." She feels her belly and waits for a response.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Well... we've seen our fair share of weird stuff....", I say.
Myster Emmet:
"Of course, um.." I look around and try to think, was there any place to lay down in the dining hall or kitchen? If there wasn't, was there anything in the foyer?
Bartender Ghost:
In the foyer, there are a few seats that could be used, sofas for people to sit and wait, but nothing as comfortable as a bed. "Weird stuff..." She trails off, "That thing was from... It looked just like his description..." She speaks in half sentences unlike earlier when you met her in the kitchen, a sense of disbelief in her voice.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Well, you do have a master key, so we could open one of the unused rooms", I suggest, turning to Emmet. "Not sure how clean those beds are."
Bartender Ghost:
With her being unaware of the current events she responds, "I need to lay down. Can you help me to my room? E201."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"It's just that the stairs or the elevator might not be fully safe right now, Wendy. I think it would be easier if you'd use one of the rooms on the ground floor."
Myster Emmet:
"Well, I don't know if that's the best right now. There's been a rabid dog roaming about...so I think we should help you to the closest room to rest."
Bartender Ghost:
"A rabid dog..." Her expression changes at the mention of that, but she trails off, "Not safe..." She looks around starting to panic, "What's going on? Richard's room should be fine... E101..." She trails off again.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Considering your husband's attitude toward Richard, I think it's best if we don't use that room", I say, as I start walking. "But the room just next to it should be good."
Bartender Ghost:
She goes quiet at the mention of Jack's behavior toward Richard while starting to walk with Lloyd. "You're probably right. He spends all his time in that study and rarely comes out. What was this about a dog? Was it... a St. Bernard?"
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Yeah... I guess Danny mentioned that dog, huh?", I ask.
Myster Emmet:
"He has, and he mentioned that he was friends with Cujo." I walked over to E102 and unlocked it, I opened it slowly and looked inside to make sure nothing dangerous was in there.
Bartender Ghost:
Opening the door, you find a standard hotel room, about the same as all the others. Central king-sized bed, a washroom, window to the outside, television, and radio. "And here I thought Danny was just imagining things... the dog is rabid... bad Jack… he never finished that..." She trails off as she looks longingly into the room, not really caring where she lays down now.
Myster Emmet:
"Bad...Jack? Is that a nickname?" I ask as I make sure to fluff up some pillows and pull the blankets back so she can settle in.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I was about to offer her something to drink, but I wait for her to respond to Emmet first.
Bartender Ghost:
"Bad Jack... I merely meant that he was bad at finishing his stories." She takes a seat on the bed after removing her jacket. "Has there been anything else?"
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Well, someone ripped out one of the stoves and threw it down the stairs, trapping Richard and me in the boiler room. Richard is injured now, and he and Danny are in the kitchen. Would you like me to tell Danny to come see you? I could also go there and maybe make you some tea?"
Bartender Ghost:
"Ripped out a stove?" She shakes her head... "None of this is making sense. If Cujo is infected... did he finish writing his story?" She feels her belly again wincing. "What is going on around here?"
Myster Emmet:
"Unfortunately, I don't think I have all the answers at the moment. But please, lay down first. I think you been through a lot." I urge Wendy to sit down on the bed and lay down.
Bartender Ghost:
She takes off her shoes and lays down, pausing for a moment to again look at the red stains on Emmet's coat. "Is Pennywise the Clown here too?"
Myster Emmet:
"Uhh, oh, um...I'm not sure. This blood got on me by a...tsunami of sorts. I didn't see the clown personally."
Bartender Ghost:
"But... you opened a door right? And blood came pouring out of a room?" She eyes the coat.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I watch Emmet curiously.
Myster Emmet:
"It was the elevator door, and at the time I couldn't see the blood. Only Danny could."
Bartender Ghost:
"That doesn't make sense... We didn't let Danny read that one. It was too scary for a kid, a cannibal clown who ate..." Pauses looking at you two... "Who eats queer people." She starts to lay down now. "I need to rest... but can answer any questions you might have. It seems really dangerous here..."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"You think that... the creatures from Jack's novels are coming to life? But Richard said that they've been here all along... well... maybe not these creatures specifically, but... ghosts... and supernatural things. As far back as 1960 at least."
Bartender Ghost:
"I don't know anything about that... but these creatures are from Jack's unfinished stories. I told you before he was a writer, struggling to finish things. It's why we accepted to come here, to get away from the city. He would get so excited about the stories he was writing back then... we would talk for hours while he brainstormed ideas." She starts to reminisce about the past while the exhaustion clearly shows, then leans back against the headboard of the bed.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Did he... start any story about... a woman who's pregnant?", I go out on a limb.
Bartender Ghost:
She feels her belly. "Nothing comes to mind, but he's been trying to write something new ever since Danny was born. He wanted to pull away from monsters and focus on romance or normal things, something that would sell well. Plus the money from that children's book about the train was drying up."
Myster Emmet:
"Oh yeah..so he wrote that....wait." A horrible new thought came into my mind, remembering the horrible train book Danny showed me earlier.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I look at Emmet, a bit confused.
Bartender Ghost:
"Oh, have you read it? He was very proud of it, it won an award." She gives a smile, "Even if it I always thought it was a bit creepy. I think kids like creepy things, don't you? Stimulates the imagination."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Well, if only the stuff from unpublished books appears here, we shouldn't have to worry about that train."
Myster Emmet:
"Oh thank god." I say a silent prayer, before moving on to one more question. "Jack, does he ever...worry you? Like with how he acts with you or Danny?"
Bartender Ghost:
She nods and then shakes her head. "Jack believes in a firm hand. A bit old-fashioned when it comes to children, a ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ type of person. He cares about Danny, but hates loud sounds that distract him when he is thinking about things. He went sober after Danny was born."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
While Wendy is answering Emmet's question, I think back to what Danny told us in the kitchen. "Actually... Danny did mention seeing a train go by with a smiling creepy face. Mean girls who sometimes chase him... And... a man at the counter in the dining room. So... if the train is from that book Jack got an award for... where are the mean girls and the... bartender from?"
Bartender Ghost:
She looks over to Lloyd while he talks about that. "So the twins are here too... I guess that makes sense. A bartender, an elderly man in a red suit, right?" She seems to have calmed down from the events outside. "I can tell you about the girls if you want, another story he never finished."
Myster Emmet:
"What's the story about the girls?"
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I nod as she asks about the bartender.
Bartender Ghost:
"We never told Danny about this one either, because it didn't seem appropriate for a child. I don't think Jack ever did anything but notes on them. A pair of boys who were raised as girls by their father. They were mean, and would do things like rip off the legs of insects. He talked about them trapping a cat in a dryer and letting the poor creature die from heat... that type of thing..." She trails off.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"And what about the bartender?"
Bartender Ghost:
"An interesting story about a bartender who would tempt people into doing bad things. Encourage the worst behaviors all while offering them a drink to help push them along. That story he gave up when he went sober, an unusual one centered on Lloyd himself, and how he would have recurring characters come into his bar. A drink doesn't sound half bad right now..." She scoffs.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Interesting indeed.... And that clown who ate queer people... did he have a weakness? Just so we know if there's a way to defend ourselves if we're unlucky enough to encounter him."
Bartender Ghost:
"Pennywise..." She looks away, "He was psychotic. Enjoyed torturing people in his fun house with a belief that fear made the meat taste better... Jack really expressed his hate for..." She looks at you two again, "Homosexuals with that story. I'm happy it never got published."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Does Pennywise get defeated in the end?"
Bartender Ghost:
"That story was from the clown's perspective as well. There wasn't really a hero to defeat him. Just a collection of stories about how he would trap people in his house and kill them horribly. He was just a man though, nothing like that thing outside." She looks toward the window at the raging storm going on.
Myster Emmet:
"Well, if he's a man, he can still be reasoned with, or at least...tricked."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"I suppose the main thing would be not to show fear."
Bartender Ghost:
"These are all old stories though. I thought Jack had given up on them. I wonder what he is writing up in that room..." She says half heartedly.
Myster Emmet:
"Yeah, I am curious about that as well." I send a silent message to Lloyd with my eyes, gesturing to the keys in my pocket.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I believe I know what Emmet might be thinking, although I am unsure how good of an idea it is. "Wendy, would you like us to bring Danny here?", I ask. "Or would you prefer staying here by yourself? I think we should go and check on him and Richard at any rate."
Bartender Ghost:
"They are probably in danger. I would like Danny to be safe with me." She looks at the baseball bat that Emmet is carrying, "Is that from under my bed? Can you leave it here with me?" She asks.
Myster Emmet:
"Uhh, sure. You can have it." I lay down the bat next to her on the bed, so it's within her reach.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Are you sure that, at the moment, you're strong enough to wield this bat?", I ask, frowning a bit.
Bartender Ghost:
"It's better than nothing... And I like to have it nearby just in case... Jack gets too rough with me..." She trails off clearly not wanting to talk about that.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
"Oh wow... I see...", I say, dropping the issue. "Alright", I turn to Emmet, "shall we go check on Danny and Richard?"
Myster Emmet:
"Yeah, let's go. Oh, and would you like for me to lock the door Wendy? Just in case." I ask her as I walk back towards the door to look out into the hallway if the coast was clear.
Bartender Ghost:
"Yes please..." She says looking exhausted, and yet her mind seems to be spinning while she thinks about the situation more and more. She then slumps down on the bed, covering herself, attempting to go to sleep. As for the hallway Mr. Emmet, it is clear on both sides, no monsters in sight.
Myster Emmet:
I wait for Lloyd to join me in the hallway, before closing and locking the door.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I step out of the room, clutching the pipe, feeling a bit uneasy with Emmet now unarmed.
Bartender Ghost:
With it being about 3:45 pm, the Overlook Hotel is yours to explore gentlemen, where shall you venture next?
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I move to the kitchen, wanting to check on Danny and Richard, as we said.
Myster Emmet:
I follow behind Lloyd, looking behind me so we don't get a sneak attack from behind.
Bartender Ghost:
Moving through the Foyer and coming to the Dining Hall, you hear a conversation being had. It is the sound of Mr. Torrance. "...and she is hiding it from me too, as if I can't see it!" You hear him proclaim loudly.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I stop in my tracks. Is there a reply coming to that?
Bartender Ghost:
Indeed there is, you hear an older man's voice respond to him, one that you are very well acquainted with. "If I may be so bold, sir, perhaps these matters need a firm hand. Simply standing by and watching things progress isn't the type of thing the man of the house should allow, at least in my humble opinion." There is a pause, "You know, Lloyd, I think you are right! Maybe I've been too soft. This is some fine whisky." The elderly voice responds, "Compliments of the house, Mr. Torrance."
Myster Emmet:
I tap on Lloyd's shoulder so he would look at me, and when or if he does, I mouth: "Should we go in?"
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I turn to Emmet and mouth back: "Think we can slip past without Jack seeing us?"
Bartender Ghost:
"Good stuff, Lloyd! Fill me up again, it's been far too long since I've had a good drink!" Jack's voice bellows while you two plot your move. "If you don't mind me asking, do you intend to return to your study or go hunting? That is a fine rifle you are carrying, sir."
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
My face drops as my fear is confirmed. He is still armed....
Myster Emmet:
'Shit' I think to myself. I was going to suggest that one of us distracts Jack for the other to slip by unnoticed...but now my plan is looking less...appealing.
Bartender Ghost:
A version of my most iconic scene continues to play out. "Hunting... that sounds like a lot of fun, if you ask me. I'm finally making some good progress on writing, though, who knew picking up the old pieces and shoving them together would make such a delightful tale!" The elderly man responds, "Indeed, sir. Sometimes the best inspiration comes from what has been written before. What do you plan to do with your wife, if I may ask?"
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I continue standing there, interested in a reply to this.
Bartender Ghost:
There is a pause, and a moment later the sound of ice cubes echoing from the glass as he sets it down. "I saw her with them out in that maze. It could be easy enough to find them. Wouldn't mind teaching Dick a thing or two about what he's been doing with her. I think hunting is a good activity for the afternoon, Lloyd, will make this place nice and quiet."
Myster Emmet:
This definitely sets off many alarm bells in my head. "Do you think, if I made a bit of noise near the stairs...that could make him come out and for you to hit him? Because we need to get him out of there." I silently say to Lloyd.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I look around. Is there a reasonable place where I can hide and ambush him from? How wide is the entrance to the dining hall? If it's very wide and I stand on the wrong side of it, I might miss the surprise factor.
Bartender Ghost:
It is a wide entrance, around 15 or so feet so many of the guests could enter or leave at once. The elevator is nearby as well just behind the entrance to the Dining Hall, with a couple of closed doors nearby as well, leading to the storage, and another leading to the office.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I look to Emmet... "Where should I hide?", I ask, unsure.
Bartender Ghost:
The sound of Jack cocking the rifle can be heard. "Think I'll take one more for the road, Lloyd. I sure have missed you." The elderly man responds, "But of course, sir, it would be my pleasure."
Myster Emmet:
"The office. Sneak up on him on my cue." Is all I said before handing you the master keyset. Walking as quietly as I can over to the elevators, I press the button to call them, giving you a chance to hide with me acting as the main focus.
Bartender Ghost:
Passing by the entrance to the Dining Hall, you can see Mr. Torrance indeed having a drink while talking to a version of myself. That version of me is pouring him another drink.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I rush to the office as quietly as possible and push the key in, hoping it turns.
Bartender Ghost:
The keyring has many on it, around 12 in total. Flipping through them, you do find one with an "O" labeled on it, and use it to unlock the door. The office is yours to enter, Mr. Morgan-Jackson.
Lloyd Morgan-Jackson:
I enter and first quickly look if it's empty. If it is, I will stay near the door, leaving it ajar just the tiniest sliver.
Myster Emmet:
I wait for the elevator to come...
Bartender Ghost:
The immediate office appears empty. Turning to close the door while keeping it open just the tiniest of a sliver, it suddenly closes all the way shut as a pair of voices can be heard behind you, Mr. Morgan-Jackson. Meanwhile, the first of the Elevators arrives with a Ding. "Well, looks like we might have company here, Lloyd." Jack announces as he quickly shoots the fresh drink.
