From: Authentic Grappling Federation
BJJ is a grappling martial art where you win through the use of joint locks (on elbows, ankles, knees, and shoulders) and blood or air chokes. Blood chokes work by constricting the blood flow to the brain by way of direct pressure on the carotid arteries. These are also better known as strangles. Air chokes work in a more direct and somewhat painful way. Basically, you need to block the trachea, as the main pathway of air towards the lungs or apply pressure directly in the wind pipe.
For the purposes of cyber role play you need to know some basics about grappling from various positions (Standing, kneeling, on bottom or on top). And you need to know some basic attacks, defenses and reversals which BJJ calls sweeps. BJJ is different from American or Olympic wrestling in many ways, but the most important is being on your back. In American or Olympic wrestling, you want to stay off your back at all costs to avoid being pinned (both shoulder blades touching the mat). In BJJ you can fight very well from your back because it is about joint locks and chokes, not pins.
I will write an outline of basic moves or attacks from each position and then you can either search for those moves on google or YouTube for demonstrations (links provided), or I can write out language you can use in role play to describe the move. This outline is very close to the white belt curriculum I use to train my BJJ students, with some added moves/attacks that are fun for role play purposes. We call these the “Candy Moves.” I did leave out some important stuff like “Shrimping” and Half-Guard stuff as to not overwhelm those new to this information.
Standing position and takedowns:
All matches start facing your opponent from a standing position and sometimes grapplers escape and return to standing as well. So, the moves here are about “Takedowns.” Some basic Takedowns:
1) Double leg takedown ( https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=BJJ+double+leg+take+down&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#kpvalbx=_GdvDYfvDPN2pptQP1PSs8A426 )
2) Single Leg Takedown ( )
3) Arm Drag Takedown ( )
4) Hip Throw ( )
5) Hip Bump Sweep (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-kuT_ZinkI)
Attacks from the “Full Guard” position:
The full leg guard in jiu jitsu is when you are on your back with your opponent between your legs in top position. You wrap your legs around his back and lock your ankles on his lower back. With the strength of your legs you can powerfully yank him forward or shove him backwards depending on what attack or defense you are employing.
1) Triangle Choke ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVvEQeasAxQ)
2) Kimura ( )
3) Omoplata ( )
4) Arm Bar ( )
5) Guillotine Choke ( )
6) Big Man Sweep ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByW1zjsRrIQ) - Reversal
When you are in your opponent’s full guard, your goal is to “pass” through the leg guard so you can attack.
Full Guard Passes:
1) https://www.bjj-spot.com/basic-guard-passes/ When you pass his guard and remain on top with your knees above his hips you are in a Full Mount on him. This is a very dominant position from which you have a variety of options for attack.
Attacks from Full Mount:
1) Full Mount Triangle ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upHd5rQmdaU)
2) Americano ( )
3) Kimura from Mount ( )
4) Arm bar from Mount (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip0Hl52JG5A)
5) North/South Choke from Mount (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glLikIEbP9o)
Sometimes you get top position but from the side, called a side mount. Your chest is on his chest from the side with one knee in his hip and your other in his arm pit.
Attacks from side mount:
1) Kimura ( )
2) Straight arm bar ( )
3) Near side arm bar ( )
4) Side control arm triangle ( )
Now you need to learn how to “escape” from the side mount or the full mount if you are in them so you can put yourself back in a position to attack.
Escapes from side mount: ( )
Escapes from full mount: ( )
Sometimes you end up in a position to attack to the leg joints: Knees and ankles. Here are some attacks:
1) Straight Ankle Lock ( )
2) Toe Hold ( )
3) Knee Bar ( )
4) Inside heel hook ( )
5) Outside Heel Hook ( )
And finally, the most dominant submission in BJJ is the Rear Naked Choke or RNC. Here is a link on how to do it, how to escape from it and other details.
I hope this helps! You can watch some of the videos. I tried to find the shortest ones. You can also look at them while you are role playing and just describe in your own words what you are seeing. I as well as many of the guys in the Authentic Grappling Federation know all of this from real life training and would love to help you as well. They just want to know how you want to work it into role play.
