This is so true. Sometimes I start a story with an opponent and they want to dive right in with no background story and rough outline of how it will progress. Knowing the ultimate outcome may feel like it'll spoil the fun, but having it makes for a better story that both authors/fighters enjoy.
Agreed. Having a background story and character development adds structure and flow to the story telling part... Makes it more interesting and draws you in more.

I can't stress this enough, when you're doing a match, even in the simplest way, you are telling a story. Damian Slater, teacher of amazing pro wrestlers, tells us the big secret - how to plan out a match so it engages a viewer/reader in the shortest time.He says this way better than I could.
