I don't think the option was meant to be about practicality. It seems like something that was put there to give users a choice of creating individuality. The only problem I have is the people who choose the dark blue and the way it's hard to read against the site's background. I agree with Azn that looking at the profile is more productive than trying to create a color coded system for genders or sexuality, those don't always have a bearing on match compatibility anyways. There can be gay guys interested in wrestling me and lesbian females that don't have styles in common with me (just as off the cuff examples).
Well, to me it's about optimizing the time it takes to find matching partner basically. Sure, argument could be made that things are not so binary when it comes to RP preferences. But in reality there are still basically 3 categories - those who fight with same gender, with different gender or those who dont care about gender. There are also those who prefer to lose, to win or to have competitive fights. These are 3 categories that could help a lot while scanning the list of online characters in chat, especially when there are a lot of them.
For example, one could scan the list with their eyes to find those with green dots - these are looking. Then next layer would be to look for those who match your preference. For example I prefer straight guys for mixed gender fights. If there was a color for that - I could then look for that color. And if there's none then I could widen my range, etc.
And at this stage I'm not even wasting time looking at profiles - yet. It would be the next stage.
I could save a ton of time. Because currently I basically have to randomly and blindly poke around other profiles in hopes of finding a match. Coloring names in a practical way could help narrow it down a bit. IMO anyway.
Not sure if you are aware, but you can also filter the list of members currently in the chat.
Once you have all filters in place (gender, preferred fighting style), you can bookmark this page, for easier access in the future.
Currently we can choose the color for our character name in chat. It's a nice feature, but I see little practical value in it... And what if it was more practical?
What if the color of character names was showing, for example, gender preference\orientation? Since ChatFighters users percentage between Gay and Straight, it could be a gradient between, say, pink for gay and blue for straight, with purple in the middle or something like that.
Another options is to use it to show character's gender - blue for males, pink females, other colors for other non binary genders. But character's gender is most of the time apparent from the character avatar so it's not so imporatant here, imo.
Interesting idea, but I worry it would overcomplicate things. People have all kinds of different reasons for choosing a color. Some have certain connotations associated with a color that are not shared with others. I like having my name in purple, as I think it looks good with the letter V. I wouldn’t want someone to see that and assume that it means something about my preferences. It’s just a personal aesthetic choice, nothing more, nothing less.
Indeed Victor, the way it is now lets you add a lil personal touch, and some people for example have all their chars in the same colours, or the opposite, all in different colours, etc...
Additionally, imho opening a profile and looking at what a character is about, is easier and offers way more information than trying to remember which color stands for what?

I am aware, yes, and because of that the name color issue is less important of course :)
